Steps to becoming an Exercise Professional:
The first step to becoming a fitness professional is to obtain your degree from a University. Here in Manitoba, the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg offer faculties in which you may obtain this degree.
The University of Winnipeg offers a 3- and a 4- year Bachelor of Arts and a
4-year Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Applied Health. In the
BA degrees there are three streams that a student may follow at the University of Winnipeg, including Teaching, Kinesiology, and Coaching. In the Bachelor of Science degrees students may choose Exercise Science or Athletic Therapy. Program details may be found at http://www.uwinnipeg.ca/faculty/pass/index.htm
The University of Manitoba offers three undergraduate degrees, the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) degree, the Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) degree and the Recreation Management and Community Development (BRMCD) degree program. Program details may be found at http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/kinrec/
Once a degree is obtained from one of the previously mentioned programs, there are many certifications available to further educate yourself.
The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) offers a variety of certifications for degreed professionals including the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and the Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP).
The American College of Sports Medicine also offers various certifications to degreed professionals.

Job Shadowing:
Job shadowing is an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the field of their choice. Under the supervision of a Mentor (Professionally designated MEPA member) the student will assist in various aspects of the day-to-day work of the organization, gaining invaluable skills and networking opportunities along the way. Each placement is overseen by MEPA volunteer staff to ensure the best possible experience is achieved for both student and mentor.
Program only available to student MEPA members.
